The ARTS Center is hosting 20 artists, each teaching a unique workshop in their area of expertise on Saturday, August 12. Workshops will range from 45 minutes to 2 hours in length and will include a variety of art activities, from metalworking/jewelry, photography, ceramics, painting, drawing, indigo dyeing and more.
Please sign up for the workshops in advance at www.explorearts.org as space in each workshop will be limited. There will be a $15 workshop fee, and some may have a materials cost.

Using the simplest forming process in clay, you will “pinch” your wat to a realistic head sculpture. It’s so easy to do! No experience necessary. 9am-11am Materials $5.00
Learn the basic hand building technique of coil construction to create your own pot. ( Pots will be glazed and fired for pick up after the workshop.) 11:30am-1:30pm Materials $5.00
Introduction to clay hand building. Make 1-3 plates and embellish with some basic surface decoration. (Plates will be glazed and fired for pick up after the workshop.) 2pm-4pm Materials $5.00
Introduction to raku glazing and firing techniques. Finished pieces will be available to take home. The first 45 minutes will focus on glazing with the first pieces ready by 1:30pm. The next firing will take 1.5 hours. Raku firing will be cancelled if there are high winds or rain. 10am-1pm Materials $10.00
Learn about the forms and shapes that create the human figure. We will use a variety of props and students will practice drawing a live model and each other! 9am-11am Materials $5.00
With charcoal, see how massed shapes of tonal values provide structure and mood. Faster, forgiving, easily changed and changeable. Appropriate for beginner to advanced level. Easels will be provided. Students must be able to stand for the 2 hour class. 11:30am-1:30pm Materials $10.00
Create a still life in the impressionistic style using a soft pastel technique. 2pm-4pm Materials $5.00
Explore the beautiful combination of rice paper and found papers with encaustic medium plus graphic, oil paints and colored pencils. 11:30am-1:30pm
Students will create some type of resist on flour sack towels using rubber bands, boards, clamps, and other objects. The towels are then dyed several times in a prepared dye bath. Towels will be rinsed and washed at home to finish. Instructions will be provided. 9am-11am Materials $6.50
Learn the basics of forging and wire wrapping to create your own heart pendant. 4:30-6:30pm Materials $5.00
Learn how to enamel colorful powdered glass onto a copper base. Beginners welcome! Please wear closed toe shoes. 11:30am-1:30pm Materials $8.00
Explore bead weaving techniques with seed beads and duo beads. Each student will complete a “beaded” bead that will surround a snake chain, creating a simple charm necklace. 2-4pm Materials $5.00
Come experience the magic of Dura-lar to create amazing mixed media collage! Learn to make colorful acrylic sins and other vibrant, dramatic enhancements for your artwork. Whether you’re a dabbler or a professional, Dura-Lar collage is fun and a little unpredictable-a perfect combination to spark your creativity and take your artistic talent to the next level! 4:30-6:30pm Materials $10.00
Mixed Media-Blooming Art Flower Collage with Penny Henthorne
Create a beautiful collage of flowers with paper and acrylics. No experience necessary. 11:30am-1:30pm Materials $5.00
Paint on fabric then print on paper to create a colorful, expressive design. Beginners welcome! 9-11am Materials $5.00
Paint lively flowers with liquid watercolors. A playful introduction to painting vibrant, loose florals with concentrated watercolors. Work with flowers for reference, from sketch to finished painting. No experience necessary. 4:30-6:30pm Materials $10.00
Create your own black and white origami paper. Includes demo and hands-on. Using the Japanese art of Suminagashi, “floating ink”, create monoprints onto washi (rice paper). While the washi dries, learn how to fold and origami crane. (For Adults. 45 minutes) 9-9:45am Materials $5.00
Create unique and unpredictable long exposure photos using a pinhole camera then watch your photos develop. Produce a negative in the darkroom and a final positive image in the Mac lab. 9-11am Materials $5.00
Learn to take better pictures by learning how to MAKE vs TAKE photographs. 2-4pm
Design your own small abstract glass piece. Choose from pre-cut stained glass pieces, learn the placement of the glass and “sealing” your piece with grout. No experience necessary. Please wear closed toe shoes and bring protective eye wear. 2-4pm Materials $10.00
Recycling Looks Fabulous On You
Learn several techniques to make jewelry using recycled materials. Use your imagination to rethink materials and design your own beautiful, wearable works of art.

Is it painting or is it a collage? Try painting in a different way by crating landscapes and seascapes from strips of painted newspaper. We will look at the outdoor paintings of the French Impressionists as our inspiration for these fun “paintings” from recycled materials. Wear your messy clothes and prepare to be creative!

Under The Sea
Do you love fish and other sea creatures? Join us and create a hanging undersea adventure using recycled and re-purposed materials! Inspired by the glass are of Dale Chihuly, we will create a hanging sculpture of sea creatures made from plastic bottles. 2:00-4:00 Materials $5.00
