Lets talk photo! Each meeting, a participant will begin with a topic and lead the discussion. Everyone is invited to join us, all levels of photographer and photography enthusiasts! Get to know local photographers and join in on a Slide Slam for our May meet up! BYO snacks and beverages.


Photography Basics with Kat Richey

Tuesdays 9-30th, 4-6pm and Saturday 20th, 10am-12pm

Do you want to know more about your camera and how digital photography works? This course will explore the shooting modes on your camera, photography terminology and definitions, and how to use your Manual photography modes to express artistic intent. In class and outside of class assignments will provide content to facilitate learning and discussion. This class will also include basic photoshop skills practice to further artistic vision and knowledge.

A Day in the Life: Photo Journal with Julie Turner

Tuesdays February 6-27, 6-8pm

Do your photos tell the story of your life? As a class, practice capturing images that illuminate the beauty of every day moments and messes. Discuss working in difficult lighting situations, choosing the best exposure, and documenting versus directing while shooting. Make your created body of work into a professionally printed photo book. Ability to shoot in manual mode is recommended, but not required.

Layers! Photoshop for Beginners with Catherine Gurri

Wednesdays February 7-28, 5-7pm

Discover the power to transform your photos from good to amazing. Fix imperfections, make colors pop, and even add a little magic or do something silly for fun. Prepare and print your images for framing and greeting cards. Use one of our in studio Macs or bring your own laptop. Class includes printed images up to 24×24 inches on our large format printer.

Finding and Reflecting: Environmental Lighting with Kat Richey

Tuesdays, March 6-27  4-6pm

Lets discuss and discover how to improve photography with better lighting. See examples and practice making your own improvements. Enjoy photographing objects and working with a model. Get in class practice with a dedicated flash and reflector. Projects will include professional head shots for class participants and your best images printed in class.

Professional Style Matting and Framing with Larry Bennett

Wednesdays, March 7-28  6-8pm

How do you prepare your photography for juried art shows, galleries, and sale? Your quality work deserves the best and most professional presentation. This class will walk you through the process of choosing, ordering and preparing exceptional matting and framing. Discuss best practices and discover the common mistakes we all want to avoid. Email 3-4 of your high resolution images to Katrichey@explorearts.org. Two of your images will be selected for printing. Class will include (2) matted and (1) framed piece.

Introduction to Illustrator with Catherine Gurri

Mondays, March 5-26 6-8pm
Learn how to use Illustrator to make your own digital art and designs. Get started by creating a logo, and then go further by designing your own vector portrait project. Print out a poster of your design to show off! No drawing skills necessary.

Contrast and Color: A study of Black and White vs Color with Courtney Barnwell

Wednesdays ,April 4-25 , 4-6pm

How do you decide the finished look of your photography? Discover how to determine the impact of your photo and how you can enhance it’s content with your editing choices. Discuss when to present in color and when to convert to black and white and see examples that illustrate these points. Enjoy in class critique and discussion of classmates personal work. Class projects will culminate with a professionally printed book of your work created from in class assignment prompts.

Promote and Sell! with Kat Richey

Wednesdays, May 2-23 5pm-7pm

Practice in class with professional lighting equipment and backdrops to create perfect images of your own creations. Includes all 2D and 3D, jewelry, ceramics, and fabric. We will look at selected items provided in class and anything our participants bring in to have photographed! Upon completion of this course, students will be approved for open studio time with our table top equipment. First month of open studio is complementary with this class. If you are unable to bring a Camera, we will provide one for you to use. Ability to shoot in manual mode is a plus, but not required. Class will provide 2-3 finished digital images of your art.

Landscape Composition with Courtney Barnwell

Tuesdays, May 1-22 12pm-2pm

Study and practice great landscape composition and technique. The right time, place, and equipment used properly can reward you with a great experience and the perfect shot. You will be encouraged to seek out great views and capture them with your own unique perspective. Receive instruction on night photography and utilizing the golden hour as well as discussion and tips for perfecting your intent with depth of field. Class project will include one large format print of one of your images created during this course.
