Summer Art Camp

Our popular Summer Art Camp gives children an opportunity to explore, create and exhibit at The Arts Center.

Four weeks of creativity and imagination culminate with an exhibit in our gallery.

 

Each class is only $125.00.  There is a one-time non-refundable registration fee of $25.00/child.

Each week long class is from Monday-Friday

Morning classes are 9:00am-12:00pm

Afternoon classes are 1:00pm-4:00pm

Summer Camp Registration

 

June 19-23 (WEEK 1)

Morning

 

Little Artist ages 3-5

Little Artist will spend the morning in a colorful creative way exploring cutting, pasting, drawing, painting and more in a playful and expressive way!

 

Creative Comics! ages 6-9
with Kat Richey
Create characters, stories and have fun making your own funny and exciting comics!  Work will include an individual book, a collaborative book and other fun projects.   Students will make and distribute a funny page and add their art to our secret comics webpage!

 

 

Paper World ages 6-9
with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
This class explores the two and three dimensional possibilities of paper and cardboard; drawing, folding, cutting, gluing, and building.  We will look at artists and their work and take inspiration from their ideas and techniques.  Students will make their own alternate spaces and the creatures that inhabit them.

 

Wheel throwing: Face Jugs and Mugs ages 10+

We will be exploring historic Face Jugs and learning about proportions! Kids will bring characters to life while experiencing the potter’s wheel.  The will have the chance to design their creatures and learn the techniques to sculpt them out of clay!

 

Beaded Batik ages 10+
with Maureen Moxley
Explore crayon batik and glue batik to create a beautiful fabric wall hanging.  Using our imaginations, and adding found objects and beads, we will create fun designs.  Colorful & crazy, simple and black and white…it’s all up to you!

 

 

Afternoon

Live Action Movie Making ages 10+
with Kat Richey
Enjoy writing and collaborating on ad-lib scripts.  Create video using The ARTS Center cameras and tripods.  Edit your clips to create your own awesome movies!  Add sound effects, songs and voice-overs!  We will enjoy a field trip on Tuesday to a second hand store to discover costumes!

 

Watercolors and Oil Paints ages 10+
with Holly Hannon
This class is about learning the basics of watercolor painting and also oil painting.  Everything about these paints are explored in exciting ways while painting fun, imaginative and personal subjects to produce finished works of art.  Watercolor paper, canvas, paints, the differences in techniques, brushes and pallets will all be discussed.

 

Welcome, Humanoids ages 6-9
with Emily Sizemore
Explore facial features and body proportions. We will create figures, both human and alien. Design your own characters and bring them to life!  We will be crafting masks and small characters out of clay.
Batik Fun ages 6-9
with Maureen Moxley

June 26-30 (WEEK 2)

Little Artist will spend the morning in a colorful creative way exploring cutting, pasting, drawing, painting and more in a playful and expressive way!

 

Pinhole Photography ages 10+
with Kat Richey
Learn about the adventure and invention of photography while making your own fun and strange pictures with a paint can! Spend time in a dark room watching your negatives develop in photo chemicals!  Enjoy editing your photos to create masterpieces for printing! Make a book of your prints to share with and show to family and friends!

 

Comic Book Workshop ages 10+
with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
Starting with a short history of comic books, this class will cover the essentials of making comics.  Students will explore creating characters and settings, pacing, transitions, page layouts and other visual storytelling elements.  By the end of the week we will each make our own short comic book from pencils to ink to color.

 

Hand building Fun with Clay ages 6-9
with Lauren Ginn

Learn basic hand building techniques while you create a collection of musical instruments from clay.  Wind chimes, clay whistles and maracas will all be personalized with texture and color.

 

 
Mixed Media Landscape ages 6-9
with Maureen Moxley
Painting, drawing and found objects are combined to create gorgeous mixed media paintings.  We will explore different techniques and textures for our fun landscapes.

 

Afternoon

 

Digital Photography ages 6-9
with Kat Richey
Nature documentary, photojournalism, fun with textures and colors, action photography and fun with perspective.  We will enjoy different and engaging projects every day.  Students learn basic composition ideas while having fun being photographers.

 

Drawing Happiness ages 6-9
with Holly Hannon
A class to have fun drawing (and learning to draw) a variety of themes: medieval castles, fantasy aliens, animals, people, robots and anything else that captures the imagination of the student.  Everything from colored pencils, pastels, pens and more will help create gigantic art panels filled with creative drawings and new skills of the artist.

 

Fun with Clay on the Wheel ages 10+

Viking Helmets & Foam Swords ages 10+

Get in touch with your inner Viking and make fantasy helmets, swords and shields from common materials.  Make fun toys from materials you hadn’t considered using and talents you didn’t know you had.

 

 

July 10-14 (WEEK 3)

Little Artist will spend the morning in a colorful creative way exploring cutting, pasting, drawing, painting and more in a playful and expressive way!

 

Short Live Action Movie Making ages 6-9
with Kat Richey
Students will assist in the writing of an ad-libbed adventure script.  Each student will have a part in our fun movie, directed by instructor and co-directed by all students!  Learn basic acting skills and make and discover props and costumes!  Collaborative editing and movie watching finish out this fast paced and fun class.

 

Squishy Art ages 6-9
with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
kids will learn a variety of techniques for working with soft materials and explore the idea of soft sculpture.  We will look at artists working in this area and come up with our own interpretations.  This class will work both independently and as a group to create their own softies large and small.

 

Wheel throwing: Meditative Markmaking ages 10+
with Emily Sizemore
In the pottery room, you can find us throwing on the potter’s wheel!  We will spend the week making small pots while learning the secrets of throwing, trimming, and carving clay.  We will be looking at textiles and pattern to help inspire our carving and surface designs!

 

Pop Art Fun! ages 10+
with Maureen Moxley
Let’s take a trip through Pop Art history!  Looking at the work of famous artists, we will take what we learn to create fun works of art. Bright colors & fun techniques is what this class is all about!

Comics Composition ages 10+
with Kat Richey
Make and print your own comics!  Study composition in comics and discuss ways to tell a compelling story.  Optional projects may include book making or poster size prints.  Comics will be added to our secret comics web-page.

 

Japanese Bookbinding and Printmaking ages 10+
with Holly Hannon
In this class we will create organic linocut prints for the Japanese styled book created during the week.  Sophisticated and beautiful arts, printmaking and bookbinding, this process will engage the artist in new levels of creativity and explore both exciting mediums.  Melted wax art will also be incorporated into the books.

 

Treasure in the Dirt ages 6-9

Explore boxes, cubbies and everything treasured! Use clay slabs to construct treasure boxes for our precious clay gems.  We will learn how to construct clay boxes, carve designs into clay and hand build tiny treasures!

July 17-21 (WEEK 4)

Little Artist will spend the morning in a colorful creative way exploring cutting, pasting, drawing, painting and more in a playful and expressive way!

 

Digital Nature Photography ages 10+
with Kat Richey
Enjoy two field trips to the botanical garden and Abernathy and other local waterfront parks.  Learn about exposure and apply what we learn during nature walks!  Enjoy a wood block transfer project and editing lessons.  See your photos printed on high quality paper and create a poster size print!  Critique and discuss photography technique and composition.

 

Stop Making Sense! Ages 10+
with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
This class is nonsense!  We will learn about surrealist art and artists, and borrow their techniques to tell our own crazy stories.  Students will explore drawing, collage, paint and mixed media sculpture in their work.

 

Pattern Play in Clay ages 6-9
with Emily Sizemore
Create special patterned pots!  Looking at the world around us, we will create our own patterns and a clay mandala.  We will learn about clay slabs and take our patterns to the next level by creating them into bowls, cups, and flowerpots!
Art Journaling: Is it Art of Science?!  ages 6-9
with Maureen Moxley
Let’s combine science and art to create fun works of art. Every day will feature a fun new project or experiment!  Throughout the week, we will add all of our creations to an art journal to take home and keep.

 

Afternoon

 

Pinhole Photography Fun ages 6-9
with Kat Richey
Make pictures with a can and learn how photography was discovered!  Decorate your fun can and make it your very own cool project!  Spy can, toys in action, and selfie projects will be completed.  Each student will create a fun book to share, show and tell all about the adventures we had with our can and in our dark room.

 

Paint It Up ages 6-9
with Holly Hannon
Painted boxes, jars, canvases, rocks, shirts; if it can be painted we will cover it with designs we create to make interesting and unique pieces of art.  Patterns and organic materials will be explored for insight into the designs along with the art of puppetry and robotics which students will create from various objects.

 

Wheel throwing: Mugs, Mono prints & Marbling ages 10+

Enjoy this very colorful week in the pottery studio!  We will be experiencing the potter’s wheel and concentrating on colorful surface explosions!  After creating small dishes and pots, we will learn under-glazing techniques that really allow our creativity to shine!
