Summer Art Camp

Summer Art Camp is designed for children who enjoy activities in the visual arts.
We encourage children to explore the creative process.

Classes are $125.00 each; Members receive a 10% discount. Registering more than one child?  Use coupon code camp18 for a  $10.00 discount per family.

There is a non-refundable registration fee for each child of $25.00

Donate to the Summer Art Camp Scholarship Fund. 

Through generous donations from individual and community supporters, The Arts Center has been able to offer scholarships to low-income families.
The children who receive these scholarships, and all the children who attend, love our art camp experience.  Please consider a donation to support these scholarships and help a child explore their artistic abilities, learn a new skill and make new friends.

Little Artists with Norma Newton

Ages 3-5

Little artist will spend the morning in a colorful, creative way; this process oriented series lets the preschooler explore cutting, pasting, drawing and painting in a playful and expressive way.

Bowl Making, Paper Arts, and Found Objects with Lindsey Groomes
Ages 10+
We will explore fun and new ways to make art out of ordinary objects.  We will create a bowl out of various fibers while creating interesting sculptures with natural materials.

Comic Books with Tatjana Mai-Wyss

Ages 6-9
Learn the essentials of making comics.  We will start with key elements of character design and storytelling and move on to page composition, pacing and transitions.  Practice drawing, writing and lettering.

Get your hands dirty as we learn one of the most exciting ways to make pots... The potter's wheel!  Students will learn how to throw, trim, decorate, and glaze pottery!

Short Live Action Movie Making with Kat Richey

Ages 6-9
A movie made entirely by kids!  Work together to make a script, become your role, direct and act, then edit and add sound effects using imovie.  The adults involved are merely minions providing support and guidance!

Contain Your Creativity! with Emily Freelin
Ages 6-9
Learn the ins and outs of making slab built pottery!  We will focus on containers; discover hand building techniques to bring their ideas to life.

 

Photo Comics-"Fumetti" with Catherine Gurri

Photograph and Photoshop yourself and friends into cool looking comics!  Use filters and layers to create your own unique look for your art.  Print your own fun and awesome comic book pages.

Mixed Media Madness with Penny Henthorne
Ages 6-9
We will use polymer clay, paint, paper and found objects to create unique pieces of jewelry and works of art.

TEEN CLASS: Stained Glass Mosaics with Vaunda Browning
Ages 13-18
A study on mosaics!  Learn how stained glass mosaics are made and make your own using local artist Vaunda Browning's technique.

A Beginning Journey with Oils and Watercolors with Holly Hannon

Explore the basics of oil painting and watercolors while painting subjects appealing to young artists in exciting ways.  Use professional tools and materials.

Photography: Up Close and Personal with Catherine Gurri

Ages10+
Capture and edit your own macro images!  Photograph close up images of food, bugs, and flowers and experiment with composition and arrangement.  Get colorful and textured macro images.  Create abstract photo collages and study elements of composition.

Michelangelo Jr. with Emily Freelin
Ages 6-9
Learn the fundamental forms of hand building as we build creative sculptures.  Discover what it takes to create a sculpture from paper to fired stoneware.  Our hands will be our biggest tool: coiling and pinching-the possibilities are endless!

Picture Book Workshop with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
Ages 10+
Bring your storybook ideas to life!  This class covers all the steps to take the seed of your story to a fully illustrated picture book.  We will start with your best idea and discuss characters, book dummies, pacing, color, layout and cover design.

Paper Mache Theater! with Lindsey Groomes
Ages 6-9
Students will choose a famous painting and recreate it with paper mache puppets and creative scenery while writing a story and performing our play for you!

 

Mosaics with Holly Hannon
Ages 6-9
Create large, vibrant mosaic art using rocks, paper, tiles, jewelry, candy, feathers, yarn and beads.  Painting, drawing and gluing will be part of the fun in this exciting class as you learn to understand the mosaic process.

Time Capsules & Treasure Chests with Paul Klein
Ages 10+
People have been locking stuff away and hiding stuff since stuff was invented, and now it's  your turn.  Put your "treasures" in a treasure chest and assemble a moment frozen in time in a time capsule to be opened at some future date.  How will things change in 10 years?

Ages 6-9
Who stole the cookie jar?  Investigate to find out!  Document your adventures in a photo journal and create fun framed projects.  Use your camera or one of ours.

 

TEEN CLASS: Acrylics 3 Ways with Penny Henthorne

Experiment with acrylic paint.  Use it as a glue to make a collage  with paper, use thick paint for texture in a painting and use it as a stain for a wooden box.

Get your hands dirty as we learn one of the most exciting ways to make pots...The potter's wheel!  Students will learn how to throw, trim, decorate, and glaze pottery!  We will explore many different shapes and sizes, but there will be a special focus on mugs this week!

Abstract Printmaking with Lindsey Groomes

Learn how to create Monoprints and Collagraphs along with different patterns and color schemes to apply with our new prints.  At the end of the week each student will make a book of their prints to trade with each other!

Portraits and Selfies with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
Ages 6-9
Investigate the art and history of portraits, self-portraits and pet portraits!  Work from life and photo references.  Learn proportions and facial structure.  Use a variety of materials.  Please bring a photo or your pet or favorite animal to class.

Comics: Origin Stories with Catherine Gurri
Ages 6-9
Create your characters and give them origin stories!  Study color, composition, expressions and how a comic artist designs for added suspense.  Complete designs and combine your creations on a poster or in a book!

 

Design Your Own Dishes with Emily Freelin

Ages 6-9
Everyone needs their own special dishes.  This week, students will design their own plaster stamp for their very own dish set.  You can expect students to create a plate, bowl, mug, and tumbler.  Built by them, for them!

Chemigrams with Kat Richey
Ages 10+
Abstract forms and unexpected wonderful colors emerge in this collision of art and science.  Experiment using light sensitive photo paper outside of the dark room.  Use various resists then process the photo paper in dark room chemicals to create patterns.  Create beautiful pieces to show off.

TEEN CLASS: 3-D Art and Sculpting with Deborah Girard
Ages 13-18
The goal of this 3-Dimensional art class is to develop our perception of space by exploring how sculpture interacts with the surrounding environment.  We will be learning how to manipulate a variety of tactile materials including wire, paper, wood, clay, found objects, adhesives, and more!  Students will also be involved in planning, revising, and reflection processes.

Planes, Trains, Submarines, and Deathstars with Holly Hannon
Ages 10+
Using balsa wood, wire, metal tubing and paint, we will construct all sorts of realistic and futuristic sculptures with imagination and ingenuity.

Clay from Scratch with Emily Freelin

Ages 6-9
This class is great for budding artists with a love for experiments!  Students will make pots out of clay they mix themselves!  They will choose a clay recipe, and mix it from scratch!  They will use their newly mixed clay to make their creations!

Bright Batik & Beyond! with Lindsey Groomes
Ages 6-9
We will create beautiful fabric batiks.  Learn about the traditional processes with examples, then start making our own!  We will focus on fun patterns & freestyle painting to create unique pieces to take home and display!

Making a Movie-Live Action with Kat Richey

Ages 10+
Costumes, scripts, edits and sound effects.  Make your own short live action film!  Enjoy a private movie screening and show off your awesome movie!  Students are encouraged to bring costumes or props from their personal collection or use ours.

Scrap Happy with Tatjana Mai-Wyss
Ages 10+
Explore drawing, dying, stencils and simple printing techniques on fabric.  Experiment with creative embroidery, sewing, and applique.  Work with threads, yarn, fabric and paint.  Create an imaginative swatch book and personal creations.

For the Love of Drawing and Painting and Printmaking with Holly Hannon

Using pencils, paint, pastels, pen & ink, on canvas, paper and your own carved printmaking block we will create a variety of imaginative art.

Learn how to use acrylic paint as texture in a painting, stencil a background for an animal portrait, use paint and paper to make a collage, and learn a wax resist method using watercolors.

Stop Motion Movie with Kat Richey

Transform a box into a new world.  Draw or cut pictures from magazines and create small cardboard and paint props to complete your sets.  Form clay characters or use toy figures to make action happen!  Use your camera or one of ours!
